Date: 13/12/2012

 Introduction

Nowadays, noise is defined as unwanted sound. Noise pollution consists of all the unwanted sounds in our daily life and sonic pollution originated in the workplace. There are some types of noise pollution found in the environment, workplace and new technology (Two sentences are missing.  Rewrite your Thesis Statement since the topics developed in the essay do not match with your Thesis Statement.  After each paragraph find in blue the main topic each paragraph is about.  So, use them to rewrite your Th. It is not easy to give an adequate noise pollution definition.  However, noise pollution would basically be a form of pollution done by different audio sources that distract, irritate or damage certain environment. Noise is really any unwanted sound, some sound that is not natural to given environment and it causes disturbance to not only natural processes but can also cause harm to human society. Noise pollution can become big environmental problem in some areas. It is not only stressful to many animals. Noise pollution

The most common source of noise pollution is transportation, in form of motor vehicles. Some other sources like car alarms, emergency service sirens, office equipment, factory machinery, construction work, barking dogs, power tools, lighting hum, different audio systems, loudspeakers and noisy people can also cause noise pollution but motor vehicles are globally speaking dominant source of noise pollution. Sources of noise pollution.

Nowadays in our world there exist some types of noise pollution; examples of this are the following:

Neighborhood noise: Excessive noise from neighbors can be frustrating and can cause a lot of unnecessary stress. In many cases, people making the noise is unaware they are causing a problem. This can usually be sorted out quite quickly by letting the person know the noise is affecting you.

Barking dogs: Noise from barking dogs is dealt with in the same way as other domestic noise.

Construction noise: Construction sites are a very common source of noise pollution. They are often in areas which were quiet beforehand and therefore the noise generated from their activities is very noticeable.

Street and traffic noise: The Environmental Protection Act does not cover noise from traffic, be it car, train, bus or airplane traffic. In some circumstances,  we may be able to tackle individual vehicle owners who persistently use their radio in an unacceptable way. Types of noise pollution.

Unit 10 - No Technology? No Way ?

Noise pollution is excessive, displeasing human, animal, or machine-created environmental noise that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. The word noise may be from the Latin word nauseas, which means disgust or discomfort.[1] The source of most outdoor noise worldwide is mainly construction and transportation systems, including motor vehicle noise, aircraft noise, and rail noise.[2][3] Poor urban planning may give rise to noise pollution, since side-by-side industrial and residential buildings can result in noise pollution in the residential areas.

Essay #4 – Should Animals be kept in Zoo?

Introduction

Should animals be kept in Zoos? I believe that animals should be allowed to enjoy their own natural habitat and live with their family freely, not trapped behind bars and cages. I do not agree that animals should be kept in zoos. Most people go to the zoo purely for entertainment and I strongly believe that animals were not created for that purpose only. Zoos claim to educate people to preserve species, a lot of animals are trapped in cages and also animals are forced to live in climates they are not adapted to.

Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals in captivity, bored, cramped, lonely, and far from their natural homes. But, sometimes they are suffering from more lack of care in some zoos. Most zoo enclosures are quite small, and labels provide lack of information, diet, and natural range. Animals’ normal behavior is occasionally discussed, much less observed, because their natural needs are seldom met. Zoo visitors usually spend only a few minutes at each display, seeking entertainment rather than education.

In my opinion, they shouldn't be kept in zoos. They were born in the wilderness and should live and die in this environment. They should make their homes/nests in natural places just as we have made our houses and suburbs and cities. It's absurd to think that we should be so pompous to pick and choose animals out of the wild to lock in cages for people to come by and look at. I mean, just because we're higher on the food chain, we think we can do whatever we want with the planet and its many non-human inhabitants.

A lot of animals caged in zoos are taken out of their natural environment and climate. One good example of this is a polar bear. Polar bears are animals that are used to sub-zero temperatures and putting them in a place like San Diego Zoo, where the temperature can reach well into the 90 degrees is cruel. For an animal like the elephant, however, it is the opposite. These animals are often forced to live in climates they are not adapted to or even capable of adapting.

During my childhood, I visited the Bolivar Park Zoo, and I did not use to think twice about how the animals must feel trapped in those small cages. But now as I am learning more about freedom and free will to choose to live how I wish, I am forced to take a step back and look at these caged animals. I realize these animals have the same desire for freedom that I do. Putting myself in their shoes, I have also come to realize that caging animals for entertainment is wrong.

Unit 5 - Longevity

The word "longevity" is sometimes used as a synonym for "life expectancy" in demography - especially when it concerns someone or something lasting longer than expected (an ancient tree, for example) - however, the two words have slightly different definitions. In a similar dichotomy to "precision" and "accuracy", "longevity" refers to the average number of years that a single person lives, whereas "life expectancy" refers to the number of years that the average population lives. This is illustrated by the fact that a drastic increase in life expectancy (due to a larger portion of the population beginning to live longer) may be accompanied by a small increase in the overall longevity of the population.

Essay #3 - Sleep Deprivation

Essay #3 – Sleep Deprivation

Date: 23/10/12

Introduction

What is sleep deprivation?  Sleep deprivation is the condition of not having enough sleep; it can be either chronic or acute. Part of physical consequences of sleep deprivation, deficits in attention and working memory are perhaps the most important. Sleep deprivation can sometimes be self-imposed due to a lack of desire to sleep or the habitual use of stimulant drugs. A chronic sleep-restricted state can cause visual memory capacity, daytime sleepiness and weight gain.

Sleep deprivation has adverse consequences for a variety of cognitive functions. The exact effects of sleep deprivation, though, are dependent upon the cognitive process examined. Within working memory, for example, some component processes are more vulnerable to sleep deprivation than others. Additionally, the differential impacts on cognition of different types of sleep deprivation have not been well studied. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of one night of total sleep deprivation and 4 nights of partial sleep deprivation (4 hours in bed/night) on two components of visual working memory: capacity and filtering efficiency. Forty-four healthy young adults were randomly assigned to one of the two sleep deprivation conditions. All participants were studied: 1) in a well-rested condition (following 6 nights of 9 hours in bed/night); and 2) following sleep deprivation, in a counter-balanced order. Visual working memory testing consisted of two related tasks. The first measured visual working memory capacity and the second measured the ability to ignore distractor stimuli in a visual scene (filtering efficiency). Results showed neither type of sleep deprivation reduced visual working memory capacity. Total sleep deprivation, on the other hand, did impair performance in the filtering task. These results suggest components of visual working memory are differentially vulnerable to the effects of sleep deprivation, and different types of sleep deprivation impact visual working memory to different degrees. Such findings have implications for operational settings where individuals may need to perform with inadequate sleep and whose jobs involve receiving an array of visual information and discriminating the relevant from the irrelevant prior to making decisions or taking actions (e.g., baggage screeners, air traffic controllers, military personnel, health care providers). (Drummond, Apr2012,)[1]

Nowadays some  people has days when they feel sleepy. But for some people, excessive sleepiness actually gets in the way of daily work. The problem of daytime sleepiness usually starts at night. Even missing just a few nights  sleep, or not getting enough uninterrupted sleep. Poor sleep habits are often the cause of daytime sleepiness.  Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common complaint encountered in neurological practice. Neurologists are likely to encounter patients with EDS, not only because of the neurological nature of the symptom itself, but also because many primary neurological disorders are associated with disordered sleep, including Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, Parkinson's disease, other neurodegenerative conditions, peripheral neuropathy, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy and chronic pain syndromes.

[2] (Brooks, 2000).

In this era, a lot of people ignore their quality and quantity of sleep. For them, sleeping is only an activity which must be done to run away from their hustle and bustle schedule. Each person need to take serious and think in your eating habits because the hustle of day to day activities are very frequently and no have good habits to eat only eat in a fast food restaurants. They should know that eating at fast food restaurants; you will gain weight very fast because it does not have a proper nutritional management.

Conclusion

Little sleep can affect our intellectual capabilities, emotions, and motor performances. To reduce our behavior in sleep deprivation, we can manage our activity so that we have time to sleep. We need to change the attitude that to be more productive. We must be aware that one-third of our life in this world is spent for sleeping and taking rest, which indirectly, are very important to the success of two-third others in our life. Some tips to improve sleep Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, don't go to bed either hungry or stuffed and

Create a room that's ideal for sleeping.

Essay #2 – The Blind Movie

Introduction

“The Blind Side” movie shows us a story of a football player Michael Oher, who plays for The Baltimore Ravens of the NFL. This movie point out the Michael’s  unfortunate life through his years at Wingate Christian School. During his Childhood, Michael lived with different families because his mother has a drug and alcohol addiction. The movie is about the best humanity acts and how a family can help Michael to live a better life with love, faith and self-confidence.

Some of the most impressive moments of the movie and the story of Michael is when Ms. Anne Tuohy, tells her husband to turn the car around to get Oher and invites him to sleep in their home. , Once there, this family starts shaping him into a well-rounded student with a bright future. She cannot accept that Mike has no place to sleep. She treats Michael like a member of the family and asks her children and husband to welcome him as part of the family. Also, it is difficult to accept that kind of love from Anne because Michael has never received so much love in his life. It is the fateful start of a close relationship, and the Tuohys eventually adopt Oher.

Some of her friends tell her she is doing a wrong thing, but she thinks that with faith she could help others to recover from a past life. Essay #1 Overload Information

Student name: Luis Murillo Garcia Course: English III Essay #1 – Overload Information Date: 27/09/12

Introduction Technology is one of the biggest human inventions nowadays. It has brought - many advantages and benefits. However, it is starting to get out of control. This is happening because of the information overload received. So how do we control technology? Every day we received thousands of emails to discover new technologies, health care tips and other overload information.

Although technology has innovated and changed people’s life , people are wasting time, having physical problems and experiencing emotional disorders due to information overload. Some of you are having tremors right now because it is hard to unsubscribe from these lists. You feel like you are going to miss something not only related to country news but also related to what some people want to know. The key factor is NOT what you might miss, but what you are actually doing to manage this overload of information given by technology. We are interconnected; society is transforming media, science and our everyday lives.

Every day in the world more technologies are created to keep people more informed; it is a way of life for people now. We need self-control of the technology to avoid the problems and take advantage to learn and increase our knowledge in any interesting topic. Some of the people problems due to overload information are the consumption of calories in order to avoid overweight. Moreover, this information development is typically accompanied by a general increase in the factors that underly overall quality of life: health, safety, education, democracy and freedom.

Some of the emotional disorder regarding information overload is the compulsive web surfing, some people spend lot of time searching information. Some people who spend their time reading books, news and magazines suffer from many fears as they are influenced by violence. They are afraid to leave their homes and interact with people. Other people also suffered from mental illness because read information about end of time.

My conclusion regarding overload information is to focus on it to imply a technological solution to reduce the quantity of information, perhaps by eliminating duplicate data. This may ease the size of the problem and may be part of the ultimate solution; However, the challenge is very complex because of quantity. Let’s work together to reduce the quantity of emails and use the internet or collaboration, blogs to communicate among us.
